Potential candidates for the role of captaincy
KL Rahul
KL Rahul is one of the favorites to take over as captain of the Lucknow IPL team. He is reportedly in negotiations with the franchise after leaving Punjab Kings.
Rahul has been offered a 20 million rupee per year deal to join the Lucknow team ahead of the season.
One of the best Indian hitters in the IPL, Rahul led Punjab for two seasons in 2020 and 2023. He was consistent with the bat on the personal front. Rahul failed to inspire his team to the playoffs in both seasons.
He's been one of the best hitters in the league and he's a great captaincy prospect for new teams.
Shreyas Iyer
Another Indian star, who has the experience of captaining an IPL team, Shreyas Iyer will also be on the radar of the two new teams for the captaincy role.
Iyer left Delhi Capitals in search of a leadership role after leading the franchise for two and a half seasons. Iyer helped DC reach their first final in 2020 and was exceptional as a leader.
His stature in the IPL has grown over the years. It won't be a surprise if an IPL team includes you as their new employer. The Ahmedabad team considers him the captain of their team.
Iyer has a lot of experience behind him, having played 87 games in the IPL. He has 2375 runs to his name averaging more than 31.
David warner
David Warner, one of the best foreign hitters in the league over the years, was released by his former team Sunrisers Hyderabad after a knockdown during the 2023 IPL.
Warner was fired from the captaincy midway through IPL 2023 before being eliminated from Player XI by SRH. He remains the only captain to have led SRH to an IPL title in 2016 and will be a strong contender for the captaincy for both new teams and some other franchises.
While he has a great deal of experience as a captain, Warner has been a consistent hitter in the IPL.
He has the highest runs among foreign hitters in league history and fifth overall with 5,449 runs in 150 games with an impressive average of over 41.
Steven smith
Steve Smith hasn't had any major IPL campaigns in recent years, but he's still a seasoned leader who is capable of taking on the role of captaincy for a top IPL team.
Smith has led Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals in the past. He has a lot of experience as a captain, having been the captain of all Australian team formats before the sandpaper door.
He had led the Rising Pune Supergiant to their first final in the 2017 season, where they lost to the Mumbai Indians by just 1 run.
Smith has been a part of the IPL since 2012 and the former Australia captain can be a great leader for any team. He has 2,485 runs to his name in 103 IPL matches averaging over 34.
