Things are going well for the Arizona Cardinals. They just survived a stretch without Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins, they are coming off a goodbye and the Los Angeles Rams are down to 7-4 on the season while the Cardinals sit at 9-2 with the tiebreaker. Murray and Hopkins are scheduled to rejoin the team against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, as the Cardinals try to keep up with the Packers, who are free at 9-3 this week.
For the Bears, Matt Nagy remains on the sidelines after surviving against the Lions on Thanksgiving. In a 16-14 victory, Andy Dalton threw for 317 yards, a touchdown and an interception. While the victory was certainly not a pleasant one, and was fueled by some frankly perplexing training decisions by the Lions’ Dan Campbell, it was a win nonetheless. As a result, the Bears are now 4-7, just outside the NFC playoff picture for now. A surprise against the Cardinals would do wonders to help his campaign, particularly with a game against the Packers next week.
While Justin Fields has rejoined the Bears in practice, all signs point to Dalton starting against Arizona. The Bears appear to be taking a very cautious approach to Fields’ rib injury, and even from the outside, looking toward the playoffs picture, there is no rush to put Fields in danger again.
The Bears are dealing with many other injuries as well, including Allen Robinson, Akiem Hicks and Roquan Smith. While a loss could spell a death sentence for the Bears’ season in a crowded NFC field, ultimately, injuries cannot be avoided. The Cardinals know this, but they survived their stretch at a depth the Bears simply don’t have.
