Derek Jeter was asked on Friday about Carlos Correa’s recent comments about Jeter’s fielding.

Correa appeared to hit Jeter during an appearance this month on the “Me Gustan Los Deportes” podcast, and the free agent shortstop said (translated from Spanish) “Derek Jeter didn’t deserve any of the Golden Gloves he won.” Jeter told The Miami Herald’s Craig Mish that he knew Correa had said something, but “didn’t think much of it.”

“It doesn’t even deserve an answer. I mean, it could go a lot of different directions on it,” a smiling Jeter said to Mish.

Correa, who won his first Gold Glove in 2023, made his comments on a podcast with former MLB infielder Carlos Baerga. He referenced Jeter’s run minus-162 defensive runs saved in total when discussing the fielding award. Correa led MLB shortstop this year with 20 DRS (revised from 21 DRS) and has not posted a negative number in the category since making his major league debut in 2015.

Jeter received five Gold Gloves during his 20-year career as a shortstop with the Yankees. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020. He has been a co-owner and CEO of the Marlins since 2017.

Correa is a free agent who can reportedly look forward to a $ 300 million contract with his next club. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Correa is in talks with the Yankees, but was seen having brunch with Tigers manager AJ Hinch on Thursday in Houston, where Hinch spends the offseason. Hinch managed Correa with the Astros from 2015-19.
